After having looked around at the other martial schools, I can safely say with confidence that this is the best martial arts school in the Ashburn area. Sensei Winkler and Osensei Ochiai are fantastic instructors. They are wonderful with both children and adults, and they are very welcoming to beginners. The school is always clean and well maintained. The moment you walk in the door you know you're in an authentic karate school. They are the polar opposite of one of those "belt factory" schools, and they are definitely not one of those "babysitting-type" schools. Here, they teach real karate for the whole family.

Our family enjoys being part of this wonderful Dojo. Sensei Winkler is highly trained and proficient, he has patience and provides a well balanced, structured martial arts experience.

We practice Kata, Kumite and self defense techniques. We are also fortunate that Master Ochiai visits on a frequent basis from Headquarters in New York. Each visit from Osensei is a wonderful learning experience, he is an inspiration and wealth of knowledge to all.

We are taught valuable life and self defense skills which are helping us all to get in shape. Our time spent together at class and practicing at home has had a positive effect on us all. It has been hard to find an activity that suits my husband and I and also our children given their age difference (7 & 16).

We are so happy to be part of the Dojo, all of the students are friendly and welcoming.

Would highly recommend to all seeking First Class Martial Arts training.

The Cardio Kickboxing is also a great workout which the adults in the family can enjoy.

My boys and I have been taking classes at Hidy Ochiai Karate for over a year now in the Little Pandas and Karate Do programs.
If you are looking for an authentic program that will teach not only self defense, but most importantly confidence, respect, self control and discipline this is the place for you. Sensei Winkler does and excellent job of engaging with his students and challenging them to do their very own best.
PS. He also teaches some kick a** kickboxing classes!

This is a small dojo that is part of a larger organization that is headquartered in upstate New York. The name comes from the founder, Master Ochiai who comes once a month to the dojo to teach alongside Sensei Will Winkler. Master Ochiai is very kind and excellent with our two kids (8 and 6). Sensei Will is extremely good with the kids and adults. He's very skilled and dedicated. My son and daughter have grown so quickly under their instruction. It's amazing to see them master the katas. They also focus on discipline and respect. I have no regrets in recommending Hidy Ochiai Karate to anyone.

I was privileged to be one of Master Sensei Ochiai's first students way back in the 1960s when I was temporarily an IBM co-op college student in the Endicott New York area. My study with Master Sensei Ochiai then lasted only about six months because I returned to school in Pennsylvania, but frankly it was one of the most influential experiences of my life. Master Sensei Ochiai and WashinRyu karate taught me fundamental principles of success, both physical and psychological.

Recently, I was reunited with Master Sensei Ochiai in his newly opened Ashburn dojo. Some 46 years later I am still equally impressed with the influence of Master Sensei Ochiai and his very able local instructor, Sensei Winkler. As the above reviews report, both are patient with beginners, especially children, but also oldsters like me.

I highly recommend the WashinRyu experience, not only for the incredible physical experience this traditional form of karate provides (particularly for student athletes) but also for peace of spirit. It may sound silly to someone who has not experienced serious Japanese martial arts, but it's true--this can be life-altering. It was for me and at age 68 continues to be. And now is the best time to start when classes are very small.

Sensei Ochiai and Sensei Winkler are highly knowledgeable experts in karate who have an aptitude not only for instructing adults but a gift for teaching children. Their thoughtful instruction teaches children the benefits of self-respect, discipline, and concentration.

My wife and I enrolled our son in Hidy Ochiai Karate in Ashburn, VA at the end of the last school year (spring 2016) in their Renshu program. When that session ended we signed him up for two summer camps and then with the Little Pandas program at the start of the 2016 school year. Our son loves going every week and talks about what he’s learning, Sensei Winkler, and Master Ochiai. My wife and I plan on keeping him enrolled for the foreseeable future. He is learning a lot, he pays attention more than before we first enrolled him, and we like his Sensei’s teaching style. Sensei Winkler is great with the children in the class and connects with them almost immediately. This is a fantastic place to go if you are considering learning Karate.
